Belgian authorities have three plans how to deal with the problem of Albanians from NW
Macedonia who visit the country as asylum seekers, the European Commission announces. However,
the Belgian government does not want to disclose any details.
At a press conference, Michele Cercone, spokesperson of European
Commissioner for Internal Affairs, said that they were aware of concerns
of the Belgian government and that they would wait to get all the
relevant information so they could better understand what was going on
at the moment. He added that they had no particular comment nor did they
plan to undertake any action.
Belgian PM Yves Leterm, who will visit Macedonia next Monday, requested
assistance from the European Commissioner for Home Affairs Cecilia
Malmström, asking her to limit the harmful consequences caused by the
elimination of the visa regime. Major problem are Albanian owned tourist agencies in Macedonia and Serbia who promise (lure) ethnic Albanians with a 'quick residence' documents if they only show up in (Belgium, Switzerland..) and say they were Albanians.
