Pretty soon we're not even going to have to watch the Olympics to know what happens. First, we had an economist predicting each country's medal count, and now we have the Associated Press' projections for each event.
By my count, the AP predicts 30 total medals for Canada and 27 each for the United States and Germany. A whopping 15 of Canada's medals are expected to be gold, with nine going to the U.S. and eight going to Germany.
Several athletes are expected to win three medals apiece including the United States' Lindsay Vonn, Maria Riesch of Germany, and Ole Einar Bjoerndale of Norway, among others. Even more are expected to double up on medals, amongst them Shani Davis of the United States, Kristina Groves of Canada, and Petter Northug of Norway.From a storyline perspective, there's some interesting predictions.
According to the AP, Apolo Anton Ohno will win the silver medal in the 1000m speed skating event, making him the most decorated male Winter Olympian in United States history and tying him with Bonnie Blair for most Winter Olympic medals in U.S. history. If he wins his three medals, our old friend Ole Einar Bjoerndale would tie his countryman Bjorn Daehlie for most Winter Olympics medals ever with 12.
And yes, Team Canada is expected to take gold in both the men's and women's curling events.If these events play out as the AP expects, Daniel Johnson, the economist who predicts medal counts based on external factors, will be way off. I guess that's why they play the (Olympic) games.
