The Rambo of Tennis, Serena Williams has once again won the Australian open.
The most memorable quote for me in this years' Australian Open came from Mary Carillo, the ESPN tennis analyst: "Serena Williams with major difficulties in the first set, however after her bathroom break, she has been fantastic". Ok, I suppose I am the only one suspicious of her 'bathroom breaks' every time she was in deep trouble. Or look at it this way, who takes a hand bag to go to a bathroom? I realize the tennis court is not the safest place to leave items, you got the camera man, and the line referees and the ball boys who are always poised to strike and steal. In the Aussie Open final Serena used her bathroom break as she lost her Second set to Justine Henin. Serena Williams was gone for more than 13 minutes. Needless to say, Serena came back 'upbeat' and won the third set 6-2 for a final score of 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.
The International Tennis Federation is becoming one huge circus. Certain players need to be vigorously tested, but either aren't or the ITF chooses to turn blind eye. I had my suspicions about Agassi long ago before he confessed of his steroid use. And what about Nadal who at the age of 17 looked like a raging bull with huge arms and legs, and a thick neck? These tennis players are almost never checked before the match, but they never, ever get checked for steroid abuse at the end of the match. It is a public secret among tennis players that plenty of them abuse steroids. More than 50 tennis players were aware of Agassi being on steroids, yet the USTA let it slide because he was deemed "too famous" to be bothered. When WADA and the ITF advised of creating new steroid abuse testing policy, guess who spoke out against it, Serena Williams: “I think it’s too much. It’s very invasive. … Basically, they show up at your house on any day. I jump from city to city all the time. First of all, I never tell people where I am because I like to do my own thing.”
